From Sunday 15 February to Tuesday 17 February 2026, Maastricht will be upside down again because of 'Vastelaovend'.
From the 11th of the 11th, the carnival jitters return and people are busy preparing costumes, materials and floats for the big parade on Carnival Sunday (Boonte Störrem). As Maastricht carnival, by Rhineland tradition, largely takes place outside on the streets, the city is fully dressed in the three official colours; red, yellow and green. In addition, 'Zate Hermeniekes' provide plenty of atmosphere and music.
For residents of the city it goes without saying, but for visitors it is important to know that various companies and institutions have modified opening hours during Carnival.

Location
Shoppers will enjoy the city centre. This is where the main shopping streets and shopping centres can be found. This part of the city also has the well-known highlights such as the Vrijthof square and the town hall on the Markt square.
