Dr Strangelove
Monday 19 October
Watch the classic film *Dr Strangelove* at the Lumière cinema, preceded by a short introduction to the Cold War and its impact on Maastricht.
The (ir)rationality of the Cold War
Discover the history of the Cold War during a special screening at the Lumière cinema. To coincide with the exhibition at the Dinghuis (10–25 October 2026), Lumière is bringing the classic *Dr Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb* to the big screen. With dark humour, director Stanley Kubrick shows how fear, power and rationality clash in an absurd way when a security system actually increases the risk of conflict.
What makes this evening particularly special is the way local history is brought to life. Amateur historian Jos Notermans (active with the Maastricht Fortress City Foundation and the Air-raid Shelter Museum Maastricht) will give a 15-minute introduction beforehand. He’ll take you on a journey through the impact of the Cold War on Maastricht and explain how this threat was felt in the city, from air-raid shelters to everyday life. A unique combination of film history and Maastricht’s history!
Programme:
Introduction by Jos Notermans – Dutch, 15 mins.
Film – with Dutch subtitles, 95 mins.
Expected end time: 9.30 pm
