The chest reliquary (Noodkist)

The chest dates back to the twelfth century and resembles a treasure chest, as it contains the remains of St. Servatius and other bishops from Tongeren and Maastricht. If Maastricht was in grave danger, this richly embellished chest would be carried through the city in the hopes of averting the danger. It can normally be viewed in the treasure chamber of the Basilica of St. Servatius (Sint Servaasbasiliek). During the Procession of Holy Relics, it is carried through the city. It is a sight to behold and is sure to move you.
