Music of Orlandus Lassus, possibly the greatest composer in the history of the Low Countries, once more graces the music stands of Cappella Amsterdam. In his later motets death and transience feature prominently. That is not surprising: in his letters Lassus regularly describes his unstable state, which did not improve with age. In 1574 he wrote: ‘I have never in my entire life felt so melancholy as I do now, and lonely.’ In this selection of mature motets you can hear the master at his best: by turns melancholy, then exalted, sometimes bursting with desire, but always unsettlingly beautiful.
