In the second half of March, Lumière – in collaboration with Círculo Cervantes – showcases the great diversity of Spanish-language cinema. Spanish is, after Chinese, the second most spoken language in the world. This results in a large number of Spanish-language films. During El Cine en Español we show some of the best Spanish-language films of the year; part of the programme is only shown during this festival. In this edition, the (political) history of South America and Spain and the lack of personal and intellectual freedom in a dictatorship is an important theme in the film programme.

Despite the diversity of the film programme, there is one common theme that is addressed in almost all films: the question to what extent we care about and are responsible for the fate of other human beings. It is a question that residents of Latin America are confronted with on a daily basis.
