A romantic picnic, a culinary event, sporting activities or just a nice walk. Maastricht City Park has it all. Discover the rich history in and around the City Park, climb the centuries-old city walls and take a moment to contemplate all the beauty Maastricht has to offer.
- Berenkuil
Walking the City Park from Prins Bisschopssingel, you soon come across the Berenkuil. Real bears used to live here, but of course this could not last very long. That is why the Berenkuil has been given an artistic purpose. You will find sculptures of a reclining giraffe with a girl next to it. Here, the artist is referring to the suffering the bears had to endure in the pit. There was much controversy about this art sculpture, but it is and remains a wonderful piece of Maastricht and is definitely worth a visit. A little further on, you will find a statue of Bear Jo, one of the famous bears from the berenkuil. He sits disconsolately on a bench, but displays a beautiful work of art. - Tapijnuin
On the other side of the Jeker, on the grounds of the former Tapijn barracks, volunteers are working with heart and soul to develop an organic city garden. The Tapijntuin is a freely accessible place where visitors are surprised by what nature has to offer Maastricht in terms of healthy products. The Tapijntuin is open to all public on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 12.00 to 16.00. Read more about it here. - D'Artagnan
A little further on you will find the statue of d'Artagnan. On 25 June 1673, the musketeer d'Artagnan fell at the Gate of Tongeren, reason why it is now commemorated in a special way in the City Park. Take a seat on the semicircle-shaped bench and enjoy all the beauty this part of City Park has to offer you. - Animal park
If you walk towards the city centre, you will find the animal park. This was completely renovated in 2018 and the deer and other animals will return to the park later this year.
As you continue walking you pass the imposing fountain. Around this fountain, on summer days, you will find cosy groups of people having a picnic. Along the canons, plop down in the grass and enjoy a sunny day. Stroll along the historic city walls and be surprised by the beautiful view over the City Park. There are lots of hidden gems around the City Wall and City Park. Once you've walked under the remarkable Helpoort, you'll end up in the romantic Jekerkwartier. Maastricht continues to surprise you...
