De Kluis art bunker
This concrete bunker, located deep in Sint-Pietersberg (Mount Saint Peter), was built at the beginning of World War II and set up to secure the Netherlands' most important art treasures from air raids (1942 to 1945). The nearest bombproof room was in the Sint-Pietersberg (MoSint-Pietersbergergvia Caves North. Some 800 art treasures including Rembrandt's Night Watch, Potter's Bull and Vermeer's Street were stored here for 3 years. This place harbours numerous stories of occupation and resistance. For instance, the illegal radio station 'Margriet' was hidden behind the Night Watch from time to time. Except for the attendants, no one dared to touch the precious Night Watch. Resistance weapons were also stored here. The kilometre-long cave system served as a smuggling route for Allied pilots who were brought through the mountain to Belgium.
