Saint Servatius Bridge

The icon of Maastricht, named after the 4th bishop of Maastricht: Saint Servatius.

Holland's oldest bridge but not Maastricht's looking south, a pillar with a statue stands on the Maastricht bank as a marker of where the Roman bridge was located. The Servaas Bridge replaced it and has been rebuilt, renovated, bombed, blown up and rebuilt many times since... but the core has remained!

A wooden arch on the Wyck side could be demolished in wartime, the stone replacement blown up; eventually it was a steel section that was detonated in 1940 and 1944.

The current steel section can raise if large barges need to pass. This will be controlled remotely; the bridge keeper's house (turret) will be filled in artistically.
