Melanie Bonajo: Thank you for hurting me, I really needed that
T / m 14 December
Melanie Bonajo (Heerlen, 1978) is a well-known Dutch artist who creates idiosyncratic work.
Hen works with different types of art, such as film, photography, performance and installations. bonajo looks at the world from a queer, feminist and anti-racist perspective. Much of their work deals with power structures, control, exclusion and exploitation based on discrimination. Nowadays, their main focus is on physical intimacy.
Photo series Thank you for hurting me, I really needed that
This photo series began in 2005 and deals with connection and loneliness. For years, the artist photographed herself every time they felt sad or hurt. These are not happy or seductive selfies. bonajo shows a glimpse of harsh reality and the real body. Red spots, dry lips, tear-stained eyes: it is not the traditional beauty picture.
Sadness captured
By always capturing the sadness, they also show that it is a normal emotion. Their face is not ugly. Sadness is allowed to be there, and crying for a while helps you feel better. This gives the title a double meaning. It is not just cynical. Maybe the artist really needed to have a good cry, and sincerely thanks for that.
