Citizen Sleuth follows Emily Nestor and her podcast Mile Marker 181, in which she is an amateur conducting a murder investigation into the death of Jaleayah Davis.
The film explores the ethics of the true-crime genre through Emily's search for her own prime suspects. With a rapidly growing audience of millions, Emily's podcast becomes a hit, but as she dives deeper into the case, she encounters a new truth that she finds difficult to share with her listeners. Told in real time, this documentary shows the rise, fall and redemption of a podcaster in the new media landscape.
The film will be introduced by Robert Horselenberg, associate professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology, UM.
