Robert Doisneau - Instants Donnés
T/m 19 April 2026
Enter the world of Robert Doisneau, master of humanist photography.
A master of photography
The La Boverie museum in Liège is hosting an impressive retrospective dedicated to Robert Doisneau, one of the greatest masters of twentieth-century photography. Almost 400 photographs, from his early work in the 1930s to the end of his career, show the richness and sensitivity of his view of the world. After its great success in Paris, this exhibition marks the start of an international tour. In Liège, it will also be complemented by a unique Belgian selection.
The poetry of everyday life
Doisneau is known for his humanistic and tender gaze. His photographs are never just clichés, but small stories full of humanity and poetry. The exhibition explores the themes that permeate his work: childhood, artists' studios, writers, bistros, the Vogue years, as well as the harshness of the suburbs and the fragility of the human condition. With photographs, documents, interactive installations and sound clips, visitors are invited to discover the intimate connection between the photographer and the people and worlds he met.
A Belgian view
Especially for this Liège edition, there is a never-before-seen Belgian selection. Doisneau's lens focuses on typically Belgian scenes and figures: from the Cybernetic Tower and the blast furnaces of Liège to folkloric figures such as the Gilles, the timeless charm of Bruges, Expo 58 and writer Georges Simenon.
