A spectacular ode to femininity and imagination
Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof presents a major survey of the work of international art photographer Ellen von Unwerth. This high-profile exhibition features 160 photographs in which femininity, fashion and playfulness play the leading role.
Icons in front of the lens
Colourful images alternate with powerful black-and-white portraits of world stars such as Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Heidi Klum, Kate Moss, Beyoncé, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and RuPaul. Intimate photographs from her first monograph Snaps (1994) are also given a prominent place. In addition, two video works are part of the exhibition.
The magic of the circus
The circus is the common thread. Von Unwerth drew inspiration from her own childhood, during which she spent three years working with Circus Roncalli in Munich. The theatrical settings, the exuberant use of colour and the dynamics of circus life are clearly reflected in her cinematic photography style.
World-renowned photographer with a signature of her own
After a decade-long modelling career, Ellen von Unwerth has been behind the camera for four decades. She is known for her playful, sensual and slightly mischievous photography, celebrating women's strength and personality. Her work has appeared in commissions for Chanel, Dior, Guess, Victoria's Secret, ELLE, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Vogue, among others, and has been exhibited worldwide in museums such as MoMA, MEP Paris and Fotografiska.
