Chris Rijk brings classic Delft blue ceramics to life with humour, provocation and current themes in dialogue.
This year, Museum W's permanent collection will be enriched by the work of visual artist Chris Rijk. His ceramics combine tradition with provocation and humour. Classic forms such as plates, vases and dishes are given a surprising twist in the form of gold Crocs, toilet bowls and other unconventional objects, richly painted with Delftware motifs.
In his work, Rijk explores themes such as queer identity, eroticism, power relations and popular culture. His exuberant, idiosyncratic style deliberately chafes against social norms and expectations. With his ceramics, he playfully explores the tension between who you are and who you want to be, as expressed in his publication Vuistdiep in Oud-Holland III: "Chris Rijk makes work about the man he wants to be... but is not - namely a potter."
