Philzuid - Opera l'Etoile
UNTIL 11 June
A sparkling satire about power, chance and love. L'Étoile is an absurd-comic opera that stings merrily and razor-sharp.
A royally whimsical tradition
Every year, King Ouf I looks forward to his self-imposed birthday present: a random execution. This year, the choice falls on the cheeky peddler Lazuli. But, court astrologer Siroco warns the king: Ouf's star is closely linked to Lazuli's; if he dies, Ouf dies. Instead of gruesome punishment, a life of luxury, privileges and even marriage to the princess suddenly awaits Lazuli! This absurdity forms the basis of L'Étoile: a witty, socially critical opera by Emmanuel Chabrier.
A hidden masterpiece
Although Chabrier (1841-1894) is less well known today, in his own time he was considered a genius by fellow composers. His unique style, which combines impressionistic tones with sharp satire and playful absurdism, makes L'Étoile an Opéra Bouffe that is both entertaining and surprisingly topical.
A top team on stage
Director Matthew Eberhardt brings this irresistible comedy to life, together with orchestra Philzuid conducted by Nicolas Krüger. The opera is full of musical novelties and challenges, including a comic 'tickling trio' and a unique 'sneeze aria', born of Chabrier's playful mind.
L'Étoile is sung and spoken in French, with Dutch and English surtitles.
