The screening of Pavements is part of Retro Reels: The '90s, a film series contextualising iconic films from the 1990s. Sociologist and journalist Theo Ploeg will provide a short introduction.

Pavement
Whimsical, rattling, lo-fi, nonchalant, playful, sarcastic and intellectual are some of the adjectives the music press used to describe the rock group Pavement. With Pavements, director Alex Ross Perry delivers a blend of feature film and documentary that perfectly suits such an unusual band. The plural is not a typo, as Perry looks at the band in different ways. He turns up archive footage, follows the band as they prepare for their reunion, has Broadway stars audition for a jukebox musical featuring the band's songs, but also works with Hollywood actors on a parody of a classic rock biopic. And then there is footage of a pop-up exhibition about the band, in which fake and real are also already happily hanging side by side on the wall. Throw all these elements into a blender and the result is a film that is already as quirky and genius as the portrayed band itself.
