Exploring Cinema - Tangerine
Tuesday 16 June
Experience Tangerine: a raw, energetic film about friendship, revenge and survival in Los Angeles.
A day of chaos
In director Sean Baker's Tangerine, you follow one day in the lives of two transgender prostitutes in Los Angeles seeking revenge, love and recognition.
Raw and human
Sean Baker is known for his films about people on the fringes of society. Without judging or romanticising, he gives his characters an honest and human face. Despite its heavy themes such as poverty and exclusion, the film is full of humour, energy and warmth. It is precisely this combination that makes Tangerine so special and accessible.
Unique film style
The film was shot entirely with iPhones, creating a direct and vivid style. Tangerine was nominated for several Independent Spirit Awards, with Mya Taylor winning an award for her role. Tangerine is an energetic and moving film that takes you through the frayed edges of the city, full of life, humour and humanity.
