Duologue brings together five encounters between old and contemporary art from the Bonnefanten 's collection. The surprising duos enter into a direct conversation, with each other and with the visitor. The result is sometimes confrontational, sometimes poetic, but always topical.

Timeless similarities
The works sometimes seem made for each other even though they are hundreds of years apart. Similarities in form, pose or imagery appear to effortlessly transcend time. These visual affinities create new meanings and provocative questions about the relationship between past and present.

Be heard
A medieval panel uses a banderole to convey God's word. In a contemporary work by Ed Templeton, a young harlequin speaks out about the right to abortion through the same banding. Centuries separate the works, but the urgency remains recognisable.

Visitors are invited to make their own connections and meaning. Text boards with additional context can be unfolded, but looking, association and imagination take centre stage.

Prelude to renewal
With this transhistorical presentation, Bonnefanten is giving a foretaste of the renewed redesign of the Old Art floor, in which old and contemporary masters will be presented together more often to make new stories visible.
