The story
In the eighteenth century, the grain harvest failed in Dutch and Belgian Limburg. Driven by poverty and hunger, rebellious farmers and criminals rose up against the nobility and the church. We follow a family who, out of desperation, join the notorious band of robbers to stay alive. The mysterious gangs that sow fear and unrest in the villages are given a name by the nobility and the church: the ‘bokkenrijders’. They are accused of looting and arson in the name of the devil. In reality, they are standing up for themselves and their children. The real terror lies in the ruthless persecution that awaits hundreds of alleged ‘bokkenrijders’.

Bart Storcken, Floris Devooght, Martijn van der Veen, Jan Janssen, Eric Jaspers, Marie-Ange Castermans, Linde Rieu, Belle Noten, Melia Loi and Tim Stuart are also back in the cast. The cast is bolstered by extras from previous spectacular productions and from ’t Mestreechs Volleks Tejater. In addition, further extras take part in the large-scale crowd scenes. And, of course, the horses and the goat also play a part in this special performance. This version also makes use of large projection screens. Cameras will capture and broadcast live footage during the performance, allowing the audience to experience the action up close. However, the drone show is not part of this performance: due to the urban environment, the required safety zone cannot be established.

‘Bokkenrijders on the Vrijthof’ is an additional performance and a worthy alternative to the cancelled performances on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 June at Stadion de Geusselt. Affected visitors will be given priority when rebooking their tickets. They have already received a message about this from Eventim and Theater aan het Vrijthof. General ticket sales will start on Monday 6 July at 10.00 am.
