Guided tour of the University Library’s Special Collections

A treasure trove of books beneath Maastricht
To mark the 50th anniversary of Universiteit Maastricht , the University Library is opening the doors to its underground repository on Grote Looiersstraat. This is where a unique collection of historical works is preserved, covering subjects such as philosophy, history, theology, law and the social sciences. The collection includes books dating back to the end of the fifteenth century.

From Mercator to Louis Napoleon
During the guided tour, curator Odin Essers will showcase a number of exceptional masterpieces, including a medieval manuscript, a hand-coloured atlas by cartographer Gerard Mercator from 1628, Louis Napoleon’s personal prayer book and beautifully illustrated fairy-tale books from the early twentieth century.
