The battle for beauty
Stéphane Symons examines why just now beauty has come under attack. In a quick tour of some of the big names in recent cultural theory and art history, he reconstructs how concepts such as the sublime, the ugly and the real threaten to overthrow the concept of beauty. He sets himself up as a defender of the classical philosophical concept. Thus, he elucidates why, for centuries, beauty could indeed be placed on the side of the true and the good.
About the speaker
In 2023, Stéphane Symons published the book Beauty in which he takes us from a bench in Delft and a park in Amsterdam past the Pantheon and the Santa Maria sopra Minerva basilica in Rome to a colourful bird in the rainforest of New Guinea. With the ultimate goal: to restore classical perceptions about beauty.
