The Last Judgement
In the late Middle Ages, courtrooms were often given a painting reminding judges: speak fair justice. The impressive Justice Panel (c. 1475-1477), made by Jan van Brussel, once hung in Maastricht's council chamber. At the top you see the Last Judgement: Christ as judge on a golden rainbow, surrounded by angels raising the dead. Below that, a court session: a rich man and a poor man face each other, while a devil tries to bribe the judges. The archangel Michael points sternly towards hell, a clear warning to those who are tempted.

Timeless
This panel is special: it is one of the oldest depictions of a court hearing in Western Europe. It probably first hung in the Dinghuis, Maastricht's courthouse, and later in the City Hall. The message is timeless: those who administer justice bear a heavy responsibility.
