Midweek for pure rest and reflection

Maastricht is a city that buzzes, where there is something to discover on every corner of every street and where it is always cosy. But do you wish you could also stop and recharge in the Limburg capital? All arrows on rest, reflection and the inner man. After this city break to Maastricht, you will feel totally zen...

Pure nature

If you want to escape from the busy city centre, you don't have to walk far in Maastricht. From the city centre, you can be at some of the most beautiful, green and peaceful bits of the city within a 15-minute walk. The Sint-Pieter district, for instance, is popular among walkers and cyclists. On the other side of the city, park de Hoge Fronten offers a beautiful backdrop of nature and history. An oasis of greenery surrounding the city's historical defences.

Inner man

You don't necessarily come there for tranquillity, yet the green entourage at WY has a calming effect. The flavours on the plate and in the glass set all the senses on edge. WY is the intimate living room restaurant of Wouter Vroonen and Ylja Berendsen, and opened its doors in autumn 2024. The young, passionate couple brings there wines and high-level dishes, served á la carte. There are the lukewarm keenderkupkes to start with, served over a fine glass of champagne from the renowned house Gosset. Then the high-profile flavours follow in quick succession. How about a combination of scallops and fried foie gras with topinambur, shiso and almond? Or brioche toast with mushrooms in cognac, a sauce of Madeira and winter truffle. Powerful flavours in surprising combinations, even in the glass.

Quiet afternoon

On the south side of the city, you can get a breath of fresh air in the city's marina. Besides a marina, this part of Maastricht also offers a stretch of beach, where you can sunbathe in good weather and go for a lovely walk in winter. After some hours in nature, SOFA is the perfect location for a delicious lunch or dinner. The nice thing about SOFA is that you can actually come here all day long, and there is a choice between more accessible dishes, and more refined flavours. The Naples-based chef works his magic with herbs and spices, and is an expert in veg dishes. While SOFA's terrace, under a canopy of vines, is the place to be in good weather, it is great inside in winter. Grand yet cosy.

Spark plug...

Those coming to Maastricht for peace and quiet should not miss the Basilica of Our Lady, on the square of the same name. This Romanesque church and adjoining Merodekapel are a sight in themselves, and house a wealth of extraordinary art. Yet the 'slevrouwe' is best known and loved for the centuries-old tradition of lighting a candle there in the chapel, at the foot of Mary, as a prayer or wish. This tradition is observed by believers and non-believers, locals and tourists alike.
