Eighty years cherished

The liberation of Maastricht in souvenirs.

In September 1944, Maastricht became the first city in the Netherlands to be liberated. Nevertheless, the effects of the war were still felt in the south of the country until the liberation of the Netherlands on 5 May 1945. In the Netherlands, we have known freedom for 80 years. That is unique and that is why we celebrate it throughout the year with guided tours, lectures, cabaret, podcasts and exhibitions.

Many souvenirs were made around the liberation of Maastricht and the Netherlands. Both souvenirs from the commercial manufacturing industry and people's own designs and crafts. Many of these objects have been preserved, mostly in the attic. They vary from hideous to extremely beautiful but always admirable. With its own unique story behind each object.

Discover it for yourself and be transported to this special period in our history during this exhibition created by the Maastricht man himself.
