The Best Kept Books
19 May, 20 May and 8 more days
This spring, The Best Edited Books are on view again at the Jan van Eyck Academie.

The Netherlands has a rich tradition of exceptional book design, known for innovative design, lithography, printing and bookbinding. This juried selection celebrates the best of Dutch graphic design.
The designs
In 2023, 382 books entered the competition. Professional and student juries chose 33 books each, with 12 books appearing on both lists. Each jury looked at the balance between the idea and execution, as well as the design of the books. What is striking about this year's selection is that designers used a lot of neutral and earth tones, and familiar, inexpensive techniques such as single-colour printing, the Singer stitch (with a single thread), binding without a cover and the use of inexpensive papers. These choices often go hand in hand with eco-friendly options, such as using residual or recycled paper.
About The Best Dutch Book Designs
The Best Dutch Book Designs has a long history. Back in 1932, the first edition was presented with an exhibition, which has also been on show annually at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam since 1954. It is the oldest annual election by a professional jury of The Best Dutch Book Designs in Europe.
