Eye-catching Heritage in Silk and Velvet

This exhibition delves into the rich forms of Limburg banners and flags. Banners and flags served not only as symbols of identity and pride, but also reflected the cultural, economic, social and artistic influences of their time.

They were used by brass bands, trade unions and churches, and provided a visual narrative historical periods. Banners are decorated with detailed symbols and patterns reflecting the associational life of the time. Flags of trade union and stock associations show the rise of labour movements, while churches used banners to reinforce their religious influence and sense of community.

Bureau Europa is collaborating with Tracé - Limburg Society Archive, curator Doortje Lucassen and Andrea Peeters for this exhibition.
