Top pieces from home and abroad
One of the absolute highlights of the exhibition is the return of the eight gilded silver Servatius plaques, which decorated the pedestal of the first bust of Saint Servatius. These rare works of art - from the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg - are back on display in Maastricht for the first time in a long time.
In addition, the exhibition features unique objects from collections such as those of the Centre Charlemagne in Aachen, which clarify the historical context of pilgrimages and reliquaries. Local treasures from Maastricht itself, closely linked to the devotion around Saint Servatius, complete the story. You can experience history not only through the special objects, but also through the smelling and listening stations where you can experience the smells and sounds of that time.

From medieval pilgrim to modern seeker
The exhibition bridges past and present. Besides its religious significance, 'Pilgrimage to Maastricht' also highlights contemporary forms of pilgrimage, such as Rieu concerts, carnival and other rituals. In this way, the exhibition shows how people throughout the centuries have been searching for meaning and connection.

Especially for young visitors
Young visitors can use an assignment booklet to discover the exhibition in their own way. In addition, families can take part in an interactive pilgrim treasure hunt through the city, with participants answering questions and discovering hidden stories along the way. The scavenger hunt can be downloaded for free from the museum's website. When returned to the museum, a fun reward awaits! They can also leave a wish at the museum. In 7 years, when the Pilgrimage Of Relics is back, it will be checked whether the wish came true.

Accompanying book
The exhibition is accompanied by the richly illustrated book 'Pelgrimage to Maastricht - The veneration of Saint Servatius and the Pilgrimage Of Relics'. In it, several authors, including historian Sandra Langereis (winner of the Libris History Prize 2021), offer in-depth coverage of themes such as pilgrimage culture, religious art and Maastricht heritage. The book is available in Dutch and English.
