SCHUNCK presents the most comprehensive overview of Ina van Zyl’s work ever shown in the Netherlands. The exhibition brings together early comics and painting experiments alongside recent paintings, drawings and prints.
Everyday forms up close
Van Zyl zooms in on details that often escape our attention, such as skin, toes, flowers, fruit and everyday objects. Through her use of colour, scale and cropping, recognisable forms are transformed into images that sometimes feel abstract or unsettling.
’s origins and identityIna van Zyl grew up in South Africa and has lived and worked in the Netherlands since the 1990s. Themes such as origin, identity, memory, longing and transience recur in her work.
The meaning of the title‘
’ The title ‘Where Are You From’ has deliberately been written without a question mark. As a result, it sounds not only like a question, but also like a statement. The exhibition invites you to reflect on the influence of your origins, memories and the body on who you are.
