A Key in the Bonnefanten
In the Bonnefantenmuseum, you will find an impressive 16th-century carving of an apostle's key. Although this object is damaged and incomplete, the key in the hands of Apostle Peter attracts attention. This detail links the work directly to the city of Maastricht, the region and the canonry.

the 16th century apostle bars were typical of the Meuse-Rhine region. This was not top art made for bishops or dignitaries, but art for village churches and their visitors. What can the mysterious little detail of the key of Peter in part of an apostle beam tell us about the churches where these apostle beams once hung?

The significance of this small but important detail is explored in this focus presentation. You will be taken through both regional and international loans that explore the symbolic nature of the key, illustrate the impact of Saint Servatius on the region and reveal how the chapter of Saint Servatius extended the power it acquired.
