Jacques Demy was one of the most idiosyncratic filmmakers of the French Nouvelle Vague. Whilst many of his contemporaries opted for raw realism, Demy created a universe entirely of his own, in which music, colour and romance merge. His films combine the light-heartedness of the classic Hollywood musical with moving stories about people who are brought together by chance or, conversely, drift apart. In doing so, he became one of the most recognisable and influential voices in French cinema.
