The Happiness of Limburg
UNTIL 28 December 2025
A compelling musical theatre play about the rise and fall of Limburg's mining industry, narrated by three generations of one family.
The Happiness of Limburg is a musical theatre play set at the Rodahal in Kerkrade. Directed by Servé Hermans and Pieter Kuijpers, this play tells the story of three generations of a Limburg family living between 1900 and 1970. Their lives are heavily influenced by the mining industry, the church and the state.
The family experiences the glory days and eventual demise of the WIllem-Sophia mine. The story highlights themes of pride, docility and resistance, and shows how the family members cope with industrialisation, war and changing society. The play is an ode to the resilience, love and solidarity of the Limburg community.
The theatre text was written by Frans Pollux and is based on Marcia Luyten's bestseller of the same name. The Luck of Limburg follows in the tradition of previous successful feature musicals such as 'Diary of a Shepherd Dog' and 'It was Sunday in the South'.
It promises to be an impressive show that brings the history and culture of Limburg to life in a compelling way.
