Discover Maastricht's fascinating past on the walk'The Maastricht of Jan van Steffeswert'. This unique route starts at the Bonnefanten Museum and ends in the heart of the city.
Jan van Steffeswert, a master sculptor of the late Middle Ages, left his mark in cities such as Aachen, Liège, Brussels and even New York. The largest collection of his work, including the impressive polychrome crucifix of 1500, can be admired at the Bonnefanten Museum. This masterpiece was meticulously restored in 2021.
During the walk, an expert from Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) will take you along the places where Jan van Steffeswert worked and lived. Discover where he found his inspiration, who his clients were and how he obtained his materials. This fascinating tour offers a deep insight into the life and work of this extraordinary artist.
Participation is free, and if you have a museum card, ICOM card or other valid admission tickets, please bring them with you.
SRAL is a renowned centre for the restoration of art and historical interiors. With a team of 16 specialised conservators, they work on various projects throughout the Netherlands, from medieval sculptures to contemporary art. Besides restoration, SRAL also offers research and consultancy.
