Variations in the light

A special collection of works by Maastricht-born artist André Wilhelmus is being shown to the public for the first time. For many years, the paintings remained within the family, but on 2, 3 and 4 October 2026, they will be on display and for sale at Artichoque Art Gallery in Maastricht’s historic centre.

Wilhelmus was renowned for his atmospheric paintings of Maastricht, in which light, reflections and architecture take centre stage. As a native of Maastricht, he knew how to capture the city in a recognisable way. From characteristic cityscapes to still lifes, landscapes and more abstract work: his body of work demonstrates just how versatile he was and how he continued to develop.

Maastricht as a source of inspiration

The city was a key recurring theme in Wilhelmus’s work. His paintings depict not only the architecture, but also the atmosphere and everyday life of Maastricht. From a young age, he learnt the craft from his father, the painter Pie Wilhelmus, with whom he sold his work at the Vrijdagmarkt.

This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to discover the lesser-known side of his work. Many of the paintings have never been exhibited before. During the three days of the exhibition, the works will also be on sale at attractive prices.
