In a labyrinth of once more than 20,000 passages, an experienced guide provides an underground tour of the corridors where names and drawings emerge of people who worked here day in day out several hundred years ago. The Maastricht Underground guide shows the way in this labyrinth of once some 230 and now a good 80 kilometres of man-made underground passages. With a capacity of 50,000 people, much of Maastricht's population had refuge in the vast corridors of this system during World War II. An evacuation room with electric light, a public address system, a bakery, toilets, chapels, a hospital, water pumping stations and much more were realised underground here, never fully operational and still present in fragments and remnants.
