Space of Becoming
T / m 6 October
In *Space of Becoming*, dance artists from three continents explore how shared colonial histories continue to shape the present and bring people together.
In Space of Becoming 2026, artists from the Netherlands, Sri Lanka and South Africa come together in an international dance and theatre production about memory, resilience and connection. From different perspectives, they explore how colonial and slavery histories are intertwined and how that history continues to resonate in the present day.
Not as something that belongs solely to the past, but as a history that remains visible in communities, stories, bodies and everyday life. Dance and theatre are used to bring those stories to life once more and to give space to perspectives that have long been less visible.
Three continents, different perspectives
Led by theatre maker Katy Streek and choreographers Luke de Kock and Kapila Palihawadana, each performer brings their own background, movement language and artistic tradition to the production. It is precisely these differences that form the starting point for the performance.
The creators seek out what connects them, whilst also highlighting where experiences and histories diverge. This creates a narrative in which personal stories and broader historical developments are in constant dialogue with one another.
A performance that evolves with its setting
Space of Becoming takes on a different form at every venue. The performance is adapted to the city, the country and the history of the location where it is staged. This creates a new encounter each time between the performers, the venue and the audience.
Nor are visitors kept entirely at a distance. The performance invites them to listen, watch and reflect on what history means today. A space that was once characterised by exclusion, control or imprisonment thus takes on a new meaning as a place for encounter, dialogue and connection.
International CollaborationSpace of Becoming 2026 is a co-production by Sites of Memory, DOX, nATANDA Dance Theatre from Sri Lanka, Jazzart Dance Theatre and Camissa Create from South Africa. Together, they are exploring how art can help to bring shared histories to light and to find new ways of giving them meaning.
